Celebration of World Statistics Day 2025 Organised by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.
To mark World Statistics Day – established by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2010 to highlight the critical role of official statistics in society and to promote evidence-based decision-making – the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) is organizing an international half-day conference titled “Statistics and Science” on 20 October 2025.
The event seeks to underscore the close relationship between statistics and scientific research, while reaffirming the relevance of high-quality, objective statistical information in shaping public policy, supporting oversight functions, and informing strategic decision-making in an increasingly complex data environment.
The programme includes presentations by distinguished representatives of the Hungarian scientific and governmental sectors, as well as senior experts from the HCSO. Topics will address:
• The use of data in the audits conducted by the State Audit Office;
• The role of statistics in shaping future economic policy;
• Trends in potential growth within the European Union and its member states;
• Artificial intelligence and innovation in official statistics.
International speakers – including leaders of national statistical offices and representatives from the academic sector – will provide perspectives on:
• Fostering excellent research through modern statistical data infrastructure;
• Strengthening partnerships between statistical offices and academia to empower society through data;
• Modernizing national statistical systems – challenges and opportunities.
Through this event, the HCSO contributes to the global recognition of World Statistics Day by promoting dialogue between the statistical and scientific communities, and by reinforcing the role of statistics as a cornerstone of transparent governance, innovation, and sustainable development.
