Celebration of World Statistics Day 2025 by the IAEA.

How the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supports Member States and drives collaboration and innovation in data management and statistics. On 4th World Statistics Day, the IAEA showcases two of its flagship statistical projects that highlight the importance of reliable, innovative, and accessible data in supporting global decision-making on energy and sustainable development.

The Power Reactor Information System (PRIS)

For more than 55 years, the IAEA has collected, validated, and disseminated official data on the world’s nuclear power reactors through PRIS. The data are reported by officially appointed data providers from IAEA Member States. PRIS provides authoritative and the most comprehensive global statistics on nuclear power operations, performance, construction, and decommissioning.

PRIS: • Ensures data quality and trust through standardized reporting and official sources. • Supports collaboration and innovation by providing a platform for Member States, nuclear power plant operators, and international organizations to share data, exchange best practices, and use PRIS tools to assess reactor performance, efficiency, safety, and reliability. Its analytical features enable comprehensive trend analyses, benchmarking, and statistical insights to help Member States optimize reactor performance. • Continues to evolve with new data analytics and visualization tools (e.g., PRIS Statistics and Analytics Dashboard) to enhance accessibility and usability for policymakers, utilities, researchers, and the public.

Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates up to 2050 (RDS-1)

Complementing PRIS, the IAEA’s annual RDS-1 publication provides projections of global and regional energy, electricity, and nuclear power trends up to 2050. These estimates, developed based on PRIS data with expert input, present both conservative (low case) and ambitious (high case) projections of nuclear electrical generating capacity by 2050. The report’s low and high projections reflect alternative, yet plausible, assumptions regarding the worldwide deployment of nuclear power.

RDS-1: • Provides transparent and comparable projections for energy, electricity, and nuclear electrical generating capacity that can be used to inform evidence-based energy policies, including emerging policy measures. • Demonstrates how official statistics can help navigate uncertainty in energy planning. • Facilitates global knowledge-sharing by offering accessible insights into the potential future of energy system developments across geographical regions, as defined by the UN Statistics Division.

This video highlights nuclear power statistics, showcases innovation, and emphasizes the role of trusted data in shaping a sustainable future.
